Combining Ethernet networks and embedded systems to design and evaluate future embedded communication architectures.

In the transport industry, embedded systems are becoming increasingly complex. Such systems integrate more and more sensors, embedded computers and decision mechanisms, leading to increased on-board communication capacities, both in terms of bandwidth and determinism, in order to acquire a better knowledge of their environment, analyze in real time the data coming from heterogeneous sensors, ensure the safety of people or to take decisions in real time. In this regard, traditional embedded architectures are very limited, thus new embedded electronic architectures (EEA) concepts are under investigation (e.g. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA),  Zonal-Oriented Architecture (ZOA)).

The objective of the EFE project, launched in July 2019 for a duration of 3 years, is to improve the capacity of these systems to support services requiring heterogeneous data rates (up to multi-gigabit per second), to guarantee a high level of determinism and real-time, but also to ensure the scalability and adaptability of the system in ordre to integrate in the future new services that are currently under development. In addition, these new embedded Ethernet architectures must meet the constraints of both the automotive and the avionics domains by proposing an Ethernet physical layer adapted to its environment. Other aspects that are taken into consideration are the  mass reduction (number of cables), the energy consumption and the cost to reach a small overall carbon footprint.

Expected results

Study and design the building blocks of an embedded Ethernet electronic architecture that provides real-time and deterministic capabilities with a small footprint, for both the automotive and avionics industries.
