« Trading off bandwidth for memory in a future information-centric Internet »

Perceived limitations of the 40-year-old IP architecture, coupled with ever-increasing demand for text, audio and video content have spurred proposals for a new, information-centric Internet architecture. We illustrate this vision by outlining the principles of the so-called named data networking (NDN) architecture, currently under definition by researchers throughout the world. Whether or not it proves possible to overcome inertia and radically change the Internet protocols by imposing a new architecture, it is clear that the technical and economic structure of the network must evolve. It is important, in particular, to exploit an increasingly favourable memory for bandwidth tradeoff by storing copies of popular content closer to end-users. We discuss the way this cost optimization can be quantified and discuss its consequences on the likely structure of the future Internet.

Jim Roberts is a senior researcher with SystemX where he contributes to projects on communication network architecture and cloud computing. He was previously with Inria from 2009 to 2013 after spending more than thirty years with France Telecom research labs. He received a degree in Mathematics from the University of Surrey, UK in 1970 and a doctorate in computer science in 1987 from the University of Paris VI. His research is centered on the performance evaluation and design of traffic controls for communication networks. In a long career, he has published more than 100 papers, chaired several program committees and been associate editor for a number of journals. He is frequently invited to speak at conferences and recently gave the keynote talk at IEEE Infocom 2013. He is a Fellow of the Société des électriciens et électroniciens (SEE) and recipient of the Arne Jensen lifetime achievement award from the International Teletraffic Congress (ITC).
